The University of Leeds has introduced a new scheme to encourage students to cycle to lectures. The project, called bike-loan scheme, will arrange for 200 bicycles to be made available for students to hire.
Reports say that bikes, including locks and lights, will be handed out to students on one year loans . The scheme aims to encourage more people to use bikes when attending lectures rather than driving or taking a bus.
Rod Damiao, a community officer at the university, said: "Cars clog up the streets and buses are expensive, so Im sure the bike hire will be popular with students and a real asset to the university and local community."
However, with an increase in bike thefts, experts are advising people who take up biking to make sure they get bike insurance to protect themselves against any possible eventualities. A bike can be added to a persons home insurance policy. Without adequate insurance cover, students could end up replacing their bike and if it is stolen, paying out of their own pocket.
