As teenagers prepare to start university, Nationwide is stressing the importance of home insurance .

Parents are reminded that student possessions may be covered by their home insurance policy and are advising families to check in order to avoid paying for unnecessary cover.

Nationwide have calculated that the value of student possessions could come to more than £1,500 as they often have expensive items such as computers, televisions and games consoles . Students are being urged to ensure that doors and windows are locked whenever they leave the house and to mark their belongings with the initials of the university and their student ID number.

Insurance provider elephant.co.uk has recently revealed that drivers born in December are the most likely to be involved in accidents and that those born on May 31st appear to be the safest. However, managing director Brian Martin reassured motorists that the firm does not rate cover based on people's dates of birth and that anyone born on an "unlucky" date will not be refused insurance .
