Overweight pets could invalidate pet insurance

Thu, 09 Oct 2008

Around 43 per cent of the cats and dogs seen by vets in the UK are overwieight, reveals a new study by Sainsburys Finance .

Sainsbury's Finance has warned that many of the medical conditions suffered by cats and dogs are linked to, or made worse by being overweight and because of the extra vet fees and medication costs, this can be an additional financial burden. The bank also warns that people with pet insurance are at risk of invalidating their claim, if it can be proved that their pets were not properly cared for.

Neal Devine, Sainsbury's Pet Insurance Manager said: "We are seeing a worrying percentage of cats and dogs being taken to the vet who are overweight. People often think they are being kind to their pet by giving it treats, but being overweight can influence and worsen many medical conditions in pets, such as osteoarthritis and respiratory disorders, conditions that can be very uncomfortable for the animal ."

Mr Devine added that if a pet owner had not taken reasonable care to prevent an animal becoming overweight, their insurance could be invalidated.
