According to research from Legal and General Insurance, if a stereo, mp3 or DVD player stopped working, 46 per cent of British people would replace it rather than try and get it repaired. Also, over one in ten people (12 per cent) said that they would replace an item just because the fuse had blown.
In addition, the study found that 25 to 34-year olds were the most likely to throw away household items that were broken, with figures revealing that 91 per cent admitted to doing so. Brits living in the south of England were found to be the most likely to throw away their faulty goods .
Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal and General's general insurance business, said: "With environmental issues increasingly on the public agenda, it is surprising that such a large number of us are still choosing to replace our household goods and possessions rather than try to repair them."
