The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that it could be beneficial for small businesses to provide their employees with private medical insurance .
Spokesperson Jonathan French said that losing staff to long-term sickness would affect a smaller company more so than a large one. Although Mr French acknowledged the cost of cover, he said there were many providers that dealt with the small business sector who could offer
appropriate and affordable packages.
He noted that by choosing to insure their employees privately, many companies were finding that it helped to keep staff absence through sickness or injury to a minimum. It was also being used as a device to recruit and retain staff.
Figures released by the ABI show that the number of people that are covered by private medical insurance has broken the six million mark for the first time in five years.
