With the holiday season upon us, its not only British holidaymakers who are going overseas, pets are travelling too. Last year, 49,910 pet passports were issued in Britain and the figure is set to increase this year.
The Pets Travel Scheme (PETS) enables cats or dogs to be taken to most countries in Western Europe and Scandinavia and return to the UK without putting the animal in quarantine .
Pet passports can be obtained directly from the department of environment, food and rural affairs (DEFRA). With more animals travelling by air, general insurers have seen a rise in the demand for pet insurance .
Tesco Pet Insurance now includes 'overseas travel' as one of its additional options. A spokesperson from the insurer said: "We've provided this extra because our customers have told us they would like to share their holiday experience with their dogs. It will help cover some quarantine costs, emergency expenses up to £300 and the loss of a pet's passport."
