Rural insurer NFU Mutual is warning people to look over the freezer cover provided by their home insurance .
The insurer says that people who live in rural areas are more at risk from power cuts than those living elsewhere. The firm also warned that during the summer months, the risk of thunderstorms and power cuts could result in an entire freezer of food being thrown away, especially if found when coming home after a holiday .
Spokesperson, Sylvia Newham from NFU Mutual, said people should check that their insurance covers the freezer as well as its contents. She explained that in just one blackout, people could loose all their food. There is no limit on the amount of food that the insurer covers under its policy.
Earlier this month, Bank of England governor Mervyn King said rises in food and fuel costs were the reason behind the 16 year high inflation of 3.3 per cent in May.
