Brits count cost of gadgets on travel insurance

Wed, 16 Aug 2006

The price of gadgets which Britons take on holiday has trebled in the last five years, according to research from a travel insurance provider.

Advances in technology have meant that more hi-tech equipment is available for UK holidaymakers, which could result in a hefty travel insurance claim if lost or stolen.

Some 75 per cent of UK holidaymakers now take a digital camera or camera phone with them on holiday, while a third will take a camcorder to record their jaunt, according to the study by esure Travel Insurance.

Jacky Brown, head of travel insurance at esure, said: "When people pack for their holidays they often cram their hand luggage full - of high value gadgets - probably not thinking twice about the total cost to replace them if they were lost, damaged or stolen.

"Holidaymakers should make sure that they have adequate travel insurance cover for peace of mind."

Another popular electronic device which relatively new to the market are iPods, which are lightweight and easily portable, while expensive and often targeted by thieves.
